Saturday marked twelve years since the day I surrendered my life to God.
I was once a selfish drunk and drug addict, blaming others for my problems. No matter what I was doing, alcohol had to be involved, especially when I didn’t have pills, coke, or meth. I lost everything, including family ties, before I was willing to seek help. Homeless, wanted on felony warrants, unhealthy, and unstable, I hit rock bottom. After praying for help, I was arrested the same night and forced into sobriety.
While incarcerated, I turned to God, focusing on my health, faith, and future. After my release, AA provided community and a framework for living, giving me a sense of belonging. I learned to address my problems, build a better life and to help others.
I used alcohol and drugs to self-medicate and escape, but addiction consumed me. In recovery, I still face mental health challenges, but I’m healthier now. With new tools, I manage daily struggles and focus on my faith, my health, my family, and helping people.
All of the good things that have taken place in my life, followed inviting God in. I don’t fear returning to alcohol and drugs, but avoidance isn’t enough. Instead of focusing on what I can’t do, life has to be about what I should do. I show gratitude by helping others and striving to be my best self daily.
Thank you, God, for today.
Have a great week,
Neal
