They say comparison is the thief of joy, and I believe it to be true. However, I also keep some high performers around me at all times; so I will know what high performing individuals look like.
Don’t get lost in comparing your life circumstances, beliefs, or your path to success, with people you don’t know anything about. When you start assuming you know how hard someone has worked or how difficult or easy it was for them to get there; you are already way out of pocket. Worry about yourself and worry about all those excuses you make for your own failures and procrastinations. You worry about THAT stuff, not them. Whatever they have, isn’t yours to worry about.
Now that we have that out of the way…stop being so sensitive and don’t cut yourself too much slack. You should absolutely be looking at other professionals, parents, and leadership figures to see how your standards measure up. I don’t compare my life to my peers, but I hang out with some very impressive individuals at times. I am proud to have of those people in my life, and if you don’t think I STAY on game, you must be crazy. I always check to see if I am working hard enough or if I can learn something from the right people.
Don’t get lost in comparison, but don’t start thinking you know better than everybody either. Watch them and learn.
Have a great day!
Neal
