I’LL ALLOW IT

Standards are important because they tell us what is unacceptable.

I have standards for how I behave, and I have standards for how the people around me behave as well. I don’t tell others what to do, but I decide for myself what kind of behavior I will surround myself with or engage in. Without standards, I won’t achieve the results I desire for my future, and I’m more likely to engage in poor behaviors or create problems in my life.

I also have standards for how I treat others and for how the people in my life choose to treat me (and my family). I want to love others as God commands us to and to be kind and respectful to everyone—until someone gives me a reason to do otherwise. I can love others from a distance and pray for them, even if they end up in a prison cell or gravesite, if it comes to that. I was taught to be kind, but not to get myself killed over it. Ha!

We should all have standards and boundaries, but it’s most important that we draw our standards from a righteous and loving place. The reason for our standards should be the positive results they have on other people. Kind and helpful behavior produces good outcomes in people’s lives.

The standards I have in my life are healthy boundaries that benefit both you and me.

Have a great day,

Neal
