I try to remind myself to be kind—until I realize I’m being unkind to myself.
I believe in suffering for one another, and I believe in loyalty. I don’t have a single real friend in the world for whom I wouldn’t take a loss. Every now and then, life asks us to step out in faith for our friends, but that shouldn’t happen all the time.
As loyal as I am to others, I am also loyal to myself. Without myself, who is anyone to me as a friend? Without myself, who am I to them? Without me, I am no one and nothing. To be a “healthy” me, I can’t neglect myself.
I need to maintain some balance. If my decision to be kind to someone continually puts me in a position where people and situations are unkind to me, I am now being unkind to myself.
Help each other out, but don’t make yourself sick over it.
Have a great week,
Neal
