One of my mom’s and my love languages was sharing music. My mom introduced us to artists like John Denver, George Strait, Merle Haggard, and Talking Heads. I showed her bands like Sublime, Modest Mouse, and Incubus. She appreciated groups like Wu-Tang Clan and UGK, but she was also not a fan, lol.
I have always appreciated my mom’s willingness to consider my perspective and to try new things or different ways of doing something. However, she knew what she liked, and rap music was not for her. She told me the “gangster” music sounded unpleasant, and she would allow me and my friends to enjoy the more positive hip-hop artists without her. She liked country music and cool music because she was from Texas and was very cool.
My mom taught me how to have a diverse range of interests, friends, and environments without compromising who I am as an individual. It’s important to consider perspectives and experiences that may differ from our own, but the world needs you to be YOURSELF.
We don’t need to be more like other people. We need to be ourselves while also being more understanding of others.
Have a great week ,
Neal
